Brunel's Three Bridges - detail
I learnt today that Three Bridges, near Southall, was Brunel’s last major project. There was a need to take a new branch line from the Great Western Railway at Southall down to the docks at Brentford, but this meant going under the existing Grand Unon Canal. He chose to do this just at the point where the canal is crossed by a road, hence it became a single point where the three crossed, and the canal runs through a steel trough over the railway, with the road on a brick bridge above.
